Approaches to Learning

Eatontown Public Schools views each student as an individual student, with individual needs. Each student comes to preschool at a different level. Some children are ready and eager to learn, some are not equally ready. Our emphasis on early learning is to support children’s motivation to learn and help students develop positive attitudes towards learning.

Approaches to learning include these developmental components:

  • Self-regulation of attention and behavior

  • Effective social skills to develop positive relationships with others

  • Positive attitude toward learning

  • Self-motivation for learning

  • Listening skills

  • Ability to set goals and develop follow through on plans

  • Understanding, accepting, and following rules and routines

  • Finding more than one solution to a question.

Learning to Learn

Learning to how to learn is as important as the learning itself. We support our students in developing:

  • Self-help skills to promote positive self-image and high self-esteem

  • Knowledge of self, family and culture

  • Sense of self-worth

  • Persistence, cooperation, self-control and motivation to learn

  • Growing confidence

  • Responsibility for age-appropriate tasks

  • Turn taking during activities with other children

Skills

Of course, our preschool students come to school to develop to develop a battery of skills. People are social and much of students’ learning involves social interactions, so we teach and reinforce:

  • Getting along with other children and adults and developing good relationships with teachers

  • Helping other and developing caring attitudes

  • Playing and working cooperatively

  • Following classroom rules.

  • Respect for others

  • Cooperation

  • Honesty

  • Trustworthiness

  • Empathy

Children learn how to manage their behavior and their self-help skills:

  • Taking care of personal needs, such as dressing and knowing what clothes to wear

  • Eating skills, good nutritional practices

  • Health skills

  • Grooming skills

  • Personal hygiene

  • Management of personal belongings
